Georgian Folk song

The singer, Teona Kumsiashvili, 30, died tragically with her 2 babies in mountinous region of Khevsureti. Remembering her, I post one of her songs.

The song says (my translation - bad one, sorry for that)

You are my pain
morning - rainy
you are my smile
smile - sad
Not as you thought
neither as I though
Let you burn, the women's sun
let me burn with you
If you dont love me,
let your sad eyes burn

in Georgian

WHERE IS THE DEVIDING LINE (cont...)

I continue to post more pictures from my trip to Zugdidi region, western Georgia.
There are only 2 villages locate across the Enguri river, which is still controlled by Georgian authorties. These two are villages Ganmukhuri and Khurcha (see the map bellow).

I already posted some pics from village Khurcha in my previous post. Now i would like to post some pics from Ganmukhuri, where the Georgian governrmnt is implementing new touristic projects (in ENG, in RU). It is indeed a nice place, with the beach, palms, etc. However, the deviding line with Abkhazia is just unbelievable. The beautiful beach, full of local tourists is just 20 meters away from the Russian military post. This made me very uncomfortable. SO PLEASE, RUSSIAN TROOPS, LEAVE THE AREA and LET US ENJOY THE SEA AND THE BEACH.

Pictures below show the Ganmukhuri beach and the deviding yellow line, across which you see Russian military post.

bellow its Ganmukhuri beach again

So, is that yellow line and Russian troops which devide Georgians and Abkhazians? Or is that irrationality of these people, who never learn their lesson from the history???

Story of Pictures

This picture is taken in Village Khurcha, Zugdidi region, the only village which is located onther other side of Enguri River, naturallty deviding Georgia from Abkhazia. The horse in the picture is in Khurcha but the other side of the water is Abkhazia, Gali region. Yes, this is striking...that's how far Georgia and Abkhazia are from each other.

This picture is again in village Khurcha. The water in the above picture is the same as here. There is a bridge, but only school children and teachers are allowed to cross in order to go to the nearest school, located in Gali region. You also see a a Russian FSB border guard standing in the close proximity from children. Locals say Russians build several military bases in Gali region. Crossing the boundary line is almost impossible now, but people in Zugdidi region have relatives in Gali region. Local Georgians say if Russians cought them while crossing the boundray, they take to Gali Police station and then either they are fined or arrested, depending in the mood they are there.

This is a picture of an IDP family from Ochamchire region of Abkhazia. Picture is taken some 30 years ago. Now, they are all in grey hair, wrinkled and stressed due to 20 years of displacement. They live in a collective centre (below picture), in grave conditions. When I asked them what was the greatest loss inflicted on them as a result of the war, answer was: "time - which we lost in displacement."
A collective centre.

This picture is taken in Ergneti village of Gori region after the war. White building that you see on the horizon is Tskhinvali Town. It is 2 km away from Ergneti. Almost 80% of around 200 houses were burnded down in Ergenti by Ossetian militias. Two pictures are bellow.

A new cottage you see with a burned house, was build by and international NGO as a temporary shelter before the house is restored. Cottegees were build for elderly population who remained in the village.

The owner said he had 14 rooms in this house.

Sad Abkhazian Wedding

It was the saddest wedding I have ever attended. It was in Tbilisi, restaurant Apkhazeti (Name of Abkhazia in Geogrian), on the river bank. It was an IDP wedding. Sounds strange right? What I mean is, a groom was an IDP from Abkhazia. His guests as well. And it was a sad wedding, not because it involved IDPs from Abkhazia, but because, everybody around, though very happy for the marrage of an young man, still were very sad. It was their natural condition. That is the way they have been feeling for 20 years now and the wedding could be no different.

The party had a toaste-master, or Tamada in Georgian. A father of a groom had thanked him for kindly assuming this reponsibility "This is a first time you wear a white shirt since the war, but I needed you today. This is a third wedding among our relatives, but we had so much more burials, and the sorrow overshadows even such a special day. So, you have to put a white shirt on you. "

Songs were sad and so were toasts. Toasts for beautiful Sukhumi, for deseased relatives, for lost friends, for torn apart societies.

I wish it will be a happy marriage for my dear friend, who often tells me "I will invite you to visit me in Sukhumi, but maybe we will be too old then".

Here is the song which was played several times:

Pseudo Values in the Contemporary Georgia

Weird stuff is going on in this country. Yes, Georgia is a transitional society, where values are not yet unified and accepted by everybody equally. Yes, there is no common understanding of liberal, social, democratic values and the process is under the way. But, sometimes fascinating, things are happening.

The top news of this week in Georgia was the fight between “liberal youth” and “religious conservatives”. Well, to be more clear, everything started with a presentation at one of the Tbilisi university of a absolutely bad quality book written by a sick man. The content of the book caused a protest/aggression to a newly created religious group activists, who arrived to the presentation and tried to interrupt it. After that, week-long protest and response demonstrations were followed, which eventually urned into the fight in the live and people from the religious organization got arrested.

And this has been a story that the whole Georgia is preoccupied now...TV debates, journal and newspaper articles, facebook discussions, etc. Now, so called “liberals” which works with a typical clan system, got still another the subject to “scientifically” debate. Now, it is a trend to condemn and insult the people who are believers or in a way different from them. On the other hand, for the members of this new religious organization, with no official links to the Georgian church, it is ok to swear, attack and beat people and then pray. Violence and insult in the name of Christianity?

This is nothing more than a Pseudo Liberalism and Pseudo Conservatism. What is the difference between them anyway? And now common people are fed with these practices. No choice is left. Either one should be a liberal but a Pseudo, or Conservative but again a Pseudo one. This is a discourse that citizens of Georgia are exposed to on daily bases. Media, universities, civil society groups, are divided on these pseudo ideologies.

But, what is even more fascinated that, neither of these liberal or conservative groups remember the country we are living in. Just a day ago, Russian troops occupied the northern border line of the country...nobody really cares.... Just few weeks ago cultural heritage monuments were demolished, nobody cares... Two years ago the country was at war... nobody really cares.... But, everybody cares about the worst-quality-ever book written by a sick man. Now he is popular and a symbol of a freedom for many (WTF).

Everybody tends to forget the social injustice that reigns in this country: 250 000 displaced population, elderly who are neglected, women who die as a result of abortion because they don't know how to use condoms, regular citizens who are deprived to their fundamental human rights like right to life, property, education and work. Who does even care that a Georgian citizen needs a permission to travel from on place to another within a country? Georgia occupies one of the first places among the countries where speed of migration is increasing rapidly. These issues do not become the subject of discussion of these pseudo liberals and Conservatives.

What should be priority issues for us? Can a society be a defender of GLBT rights, for instance, if its life is under the danger on daily bases or if it is unemployed and hungry or uneducated?

Медияпропаганда: STOP IT

(Http://www.newsru.com/world/12aug2008/rehearsal.html)

‘Avatar is real’ Story of a Sacred Mountain

‘Avatar is real’, say tribal people

Following the film ‘Avatar’’ swin at the Golden Globes, tribal people have claimed that the film tells the real story of their lives today.

A Penan man from Sarawak, in the Malaysian part of Borneo, told Survival, ‘The Penan people cannot live without the rainforest. The forest looks after us, and we look after it. We understand the plants and the animals because we have lived here for many, many years, since the time of our ancestors.

‘The Na’vi people in ‘Avatar’ cry because their forest is destroyed. It’s the same with the Penan. Logging companies are chopping down our big trees and polluting our rivers, and the animals we hunt are dying.’

Kalahari Bushman Jumanda Gakelebone said, ‘We the Bushmen are the first inhabitants in southern Africa. We are being denied rights to our land and appeal to the world to help us. ‘Avatar’ makes me happy as it shows the world about what it is to be a Bushman, and what our land is to us. Land and Bushmen are the same.’

Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, known as the Dalai Lama of the Rainforest, said, ‘My Yanomami people have always lived in peace with the forest. Our ancestors taught us to understand our land and animals. We have used this knowledge carefully, for our existence depends on it. My Yanomami land was invaded by miners. A fifth of our people died from diseases we had never known.’

Director James Cameron received his Golden Globes awards for ‘Avatar’ last week, and revealed one of the central ideas of the film.

‘Avatar asks us to see that everything is connected,’ he said in his acceptance speech, ‘All human beings to each other, and us to the earth.

Cameron was inspired by the Maori language of New Zealand when devising the language spoken by the Na’vi.

Survival’s director Stephen Corry says, ‘Just as the Na’vi describe the forest of Pandora as ‘their everything’, for most tribal peoples, life and land have always been deeply connected.

‘The fundamental story of Avatar – if you take away the multi-coloured lemurs, the long-trunked horses and warring androids – is being played out time and time again, on our planet.

‘Like the Na’vi of ‘Avatar’, the world’s last-remaining tribal peoples – from the Amazon to Siberia – are also at risk of extinction, as their lands are appropriated by powerful forces for profit-making reasons such as colonization, logging and mining.’

‘One of the best ways of protecting the our world’s natural heritage is surprisingly simple; it is to secure the land rights of tribal peoples.’

What is your ethnicity

After the end of the Cold War, everybody thought that there would only be the peace and love in the world. But, in fact, the worst things started to happen, especially, in Balkans and former Soviet space. People who once lived in peace together started to fight.

There are Upper and Lower Avnevi, two villages in South Ossetia

“Out of 400 homes only 2 have remained whole from Lower Avnevi which was settled by Georgians before the August 200. Ossetian women from upper Avnevi (Ossetian settlement) guarded the two untouched houses. One of the local people, Anna, showed us the house of the remaining inhabitants of the village Zalina Bestaeva and Durmshikhan Sekturashvili. According to Anna and Zalina the village lived harmoniously until the war, they worked with the cattle together. Zalina and Durmshikhan have been married for 49 years – she is 66 and he is 68. They have two daughters, 8 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One of their daughters is married to a Georgian, the other to an Ossetian. In 1992 their only son was shot by a former friend on the way home from the village of Khtagurovo. In the beginning of August Zalina and her daughter’s family went to Tbilisi. But she returned after a few days to her husband, as he refused to leave the house. In their house now they have no electricity, water or gas. The mobile phone works, which the old couple use to talk to their daughters and grand children. Their grandchildren miss their grandfather terribly... Their daughter’s house was burnt down but they would be ready to come back if they are allowed to. They would first of all live with Zalina and then rebuild their home…

The second family was also a mixed family; the father was a Georgian and the wife an Ossetian. The head of the house – a farmer, self-respecting man, was in a deep depression. It was harder for him than for Zalina and her husband to survive recent events. Perhaps this is because Zalina and Durmshikhan deeply and sincerely believe in the next New World, where they will be reunited with their dead son, and they will all be happy again.”  (story here).

Ossetians were one of the most numerous ethnic groups in Georgia. According to 1989 Soviet census, Ossetians numbered 164,055 persons, with 98,823 resident outside the former autonomous region of South Ossetia. Now Approximately 38,000 remain in the rest of Georgia.  There were several mixed villages in South Ossetia. Much of the inter-ethnic mixing that existed before 1990 has been lost. A handful of ethnically mixed villages survived.

It is fascinating how neighbors and friends turned into enemies, how people who once had a lot in common end up having nothing in common. I reject the idea that there have been an ancient tribal hatred between Ossetians and Georgians. This was not so. Traditionally, both people lived peacefully with high rate of intermarriages. How did it happen, that people once ignorant to their ethnic identities no start to stick to this identity and furthermore, attack and insult people once they called friends. Why did they fight against each other? Why did they burn down houses of each other? Because of the survival of their “nation”?. But that was not the concern just few years ago….

I wish I could travel to South Ossetia. I want to find out answers to those questions. I would try to look at the similarities between Georgians and Ossetians. To me they are all the same. :)

Where is Georgia now

I was inspired to write this post by a Caucasus project and their amazing articles. They try to find out how do Armenians and Azeris leave in Georgia. Several quotes are very interesting but controversial as well.

For example. Onnik Krikorian writes: “Tbilisi, capital of Georgia and arguably the cultural heart of the South Caucasus. It’s always a delight to visit and not least because it is perhaps the only place in the region where Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Georgians can meet without centuries of mutual hostility and post-Soviet conflict driving a wedge between people with more in common than not. For Armenians and Azeris this is especially true given the still frozen conflict over Nagorno Karabakh. Overcoming negative stereotypes in the South Caucasus

Vusala Alibayli quotes an Azeri woman from Georgia: “This is Georgia, after all. There is not any discrimination among nationalities”.

These are perception of Azeri and Armenian journalists who traveled to Georgia to observe how ethnic Azeris and Armenians co-exist in Georgia. And they conclude that, if they can live together peacefully on this land, they can also live elsewhere.

This is really an encouraging observation. But, how come inter-ethnic tension remain as a top problem of Georgia?

Georgia was and still remains as the most multi-ethnic state in the South Caucasus.

But the comparison of 1989 and 2002 censuses shows that number of ethnic minorities have been decreasing.

Two territorial wars and one civil war negatively affected not only ethnic Georgian but other groups as well. But it was not only the war and bad economic conditions. It was also the phenomenon that most of Georgians and especially politicians considered ethnic minorities as threat to Georgian Statehood. Intolerance and discrimination was a common practice.

Things started to change probably around 2004. New government representatives often underline that citizenship, not ethnic belongingness is important. President Saakashvilis comment is one of the most outstanding: “If somebody hates Armenians, I Mikheil Saakashvili will be an Armenian with him, if somebody hates Ossetians I will be an Ossetian with him. Hates Azeries? - I will be an Azeri, hates Jews? - I’ll be a Jew but still I will remain the greatest Georgian because patriotism is not measured by people’s origin - but by the efforts of people like you.” Though, Saakashvili did not reinforce his words with real deeds, especially in Abkhazian and South Ossetian context. His military rhetoric was disturbing, further alienating Abkhazians and Ossetians. He, in fact, introduced an “enemy image” for Russians, Abkhazians and Ossetians in Georgia, and many might even believed that.

Though, a new tendency after so called Rose revolution is clearly noticeable. The ethnic diversity is presented as a value itself, not an obstacle. It is no longer a good tone for politicians to talk about “Georgians” but rather about “Georgian citizens”.

And changes are noticeable. For example, the official web-page of the Conservative Party of Georgia, members of which are supporters of former Georgian President Gamsakhurdia, is now operating on Georgian, Azeri, Armenian, Abkhazian, Ossetian, and Russian languages. http://conservatives.ge/

To leave politicians aside, Georgians do consider themselves as tolerant people and statements like: “it is due to our tolerance that we have problems with South Ossetia and Abkhazia”, are sometimes made. Though, from my observation, tolerance is still a new and undigested concept in Georgia. Paradoxically, the older generation – those who were brought up during the Soviet Union under Communist slogans of ‘friendship of nations” “equality for all”, are less tolerant.

Hopefully, young generation remains committed to the idea of “Unity in Diversity” and bring real changes to the country.
